New Energy Farms (NEF) is now providing on-mill production of synthetic seeds through licensing of its CEEDS™ technology in Brazil. CEEDS™ addresses several long-standing problems in sugarcane production – lowering the high cost of field seed production, reducing disease risk, and improving overall planting efficiency. Traditional seed cane systems are expensive and slow, often relying on capital-intensive equipment or high levels of labour.
CEEDS™ technology produces small, uniform synthetic seeds (or propagules) that are drilled directly into the ground, eliminating many of the inefficiencies of conventional sugarcane planting. Production takes place in compact CEEDS™ nurseries located at mill sites, removing the need for large seed cane fields. This allows the seed area to be harvested for sugar production instead, increasing profitability.
Less than 5 hectares of non-agricultural land can produce enough CEEDS™ for 1,000 hectares of planting, compared to more than 175 hectares required for traditional seed cane. Because CEEDS™ are produced from meristem (tissue culture) material, they are disease-free, uniform, and cost-effective.
Planting is fully automated, faster, and safer, using lightweight planters capable of over 1 ha/hour, resulting in a larger area planted within the ideal window. Capital equipment costs are up to 65% lower, while requiring only half the operating staff of conventional systems.
NEF also provides on-mill CEEDS™ production, enabling customers to further reduce costs through on-site use of existing mill resources such as electricity, wastewater for irrigation, substrate production from waste, and staff sharing, putting full control of seed-cane production via CEEDS™ directly in the customer’s hands.
CEEDS™ have been developed over 10 years of testing and refinement in Brazil and other regions, supported by a partnership with Explante Biotecnologia, Brazil’s leading sugarcane meristem producer, to ensure the supply of high-quality plant material.
If you would like to implement CEEDS™ at your mill in Brazil, NEF offers a comprehensive 12-18 month training programme to transfer the technology directly to your team. Initial production can begin with a low investment, often using existing nursery (MPB) infrastructure. A fixed-price package provides a commercial licence with affordable royalties and scalable options, supporting production from 1 to 1,000 hectares per year.
