Brazil – Explante Project

New Energy Farms has entered a partnership with Explante Biotecnologia, a company with excellence in the production of meristems and quality MPB seedlings for production of sugarcane via CEEDS™ technology.

New Energy Farms (NEF) and Explante Biotecnologia are supplying the Brazilian sugarcane market with synthetic seeds (CEEDS™), both direct and licensed to mills.

After seven years of development and initial trials of CEEDS™ in several Brazilian mills, the technology has been improved to offer the benefits of disease-free material that can be planted mechanically to reduce production costs and allow 100% of the planting area to be used for sugar, ethanol, and energy production.

CEEDS™ is a patented technology developed by NEF. It consists of small capsules, containing substrate, nutrients, plant protection products, biologicals, and vigorous plant material. They are coated with a fully biodegradable polymer to protect them during storage and planting. Planting is carried out using semi-automatic planters, which significantly reduces the amount of labour required in the field, increases the speed of planting, and revolutionises the way sugar cane is planted. CEEDS™ can be used to produce planting material for any variety available in Brazil.

The CEEDS™ Latam project is being developed at Explante Biotecnologia, where we are producing the material for planting at partner mills to enable customers to buy CEEDS to establish commercial areas. This programme will also offer partner mills the opportunity to learn all aspects of the in-house production option for mills to manufacture CEEDS™ for their own supply (which can range from 1,000 to 5,000 ha per year per production module). These modules are horticulturally intensive sites of reduced size, which can be a new project or an expansion of the production capacity of existing seedling production facilities. CEEDS™ has been successfully used to produce material from all Brazilian breeding programmes and can be used by customers for the varieties they require.
