New Energy Farms (NEF) and Explante Biotecnologia are supplying synthetic seeds (CEEDS™) to the Brazilian sugarcane market through direct sales and in-house production by the mills (licensing).

After seven years of development and the first tests with CEEDS™ carried out in several mills in Brazil, the technology has been improved, offering benefits in terms of disease-free material that can be planted mechanically to reduce production costs and use 100% of nursery areas for the production of sugar, ethanol and energy.

CEEDS™ is a technology patented by NEF, consisting of small capsules of approximately 07 cm, containing substrate, nutrients, crop protection, biologicals and vigorous plant material. They are coated with a totally biodegradable polymer to protect them during storage and planting (images below). Planting is done with fully automatic planters, eliminating the need for labour in the field, increasing planting speed and revolutionising the way sugar cane is planted. CEEDS™ can be used to produce planting material for any variety available in Brazil.

Explante is now making CEEDS™ sugarcane available for purchase by Brazilian customers in a first project to enable customers to plant demonstration areas. This programme will also offer partner mills the opportunity to get to know all aspects of the in-house production option for mills that use CEEDS™ production modules for in-house supply (which can be from 500 to 5,000 ha per year per production module). These modules are horticulture-intensive sites of reduced size, which can be a new project or an expansion of the production capacity of existing facilities for the production of seedlings (MPB). CEEDS™ has been successfully used to produce material from all Brazilian breeding programmes and can be used by clients for the varieties they want. “Innovation is present in the field and agribusiness is experiencing moments of opportunity. In this sense, New Energy Farms (NEF), known for innovating and transforming processes with a focus on identifying problems and generating new solutions for perennial grass plantations, NEF brings CEEDS™ technology to the domestic market. High technology combined with great efficiency and cost reduction, generating high performance in sugarcane plantations; the evolution of mechanised planting,” said Pablo Marin, Director of LATAM Operations at New Energy Farms.

“With the evolution of technologies, we will be able to solve problems of low productivity in sugarcane plantations and optimise labour in the field. Today, with biotechnology, we have the best way to eliminate phytosanitary problems and increase establishment rates. Now, with the use of CEEDS Technology, we will have the opportunity to bring a complete technological package to the reform of sugarcane plantations, in an optimised way and with lower planting costs. The partnership with NEF is part of the company’s strategic growth plan in the sugar-alcohol sector and in the development of innovative technologies for other crops in Brazil,” said Alexandre Landgraf, director of Explante.

“All sugarcane mills urgently need to solve the problem of mechanising sugarcane planting, as well as operating much more efficiently and at much more attractive costs. CEEDS technology was developed to solve the problems of quality, productivity, planting efficiency and cost reduction,” said Daniel Bachner, partner at New Energy Farms.

New Energy Farms (NEF) is an agricultural technology company created in 2010 to develop synthetic seeds for crops that do not produce conventional seeds, such as sugar cane. NEF has developed and patented the unique and innovative CEEDS™ technology for the multiplication and planting of sugarcane crops worldwide. CEEDS™ is a small coated propagule that is planted directly in the field like a conventional seed.

Explante Biotecnologia, which has been in the market for more than 20 years, has been developing processes and technologies for producing in vitro seedlings on a large scale, with the aim of meeting the growing demand from producers and companies that need to expand high-potential genetic materials. Explante has been evolving its seedling production processes with modern meristem extraction and plant multiplication techniques, using improved bioreactors for different crops. Our process guarantees the formation of healthy, highly productive fields for agribusiness.
