New Energy Farms (NEF) and Explante Biotecnologia announced today that they have entered into an agreement to supply NEF’s CEEDS™ technology to the Brazilian sugarcane market.
After the first trials with CEEDS carried out in several mills in Brazil, the technology has been further developed, offering benefits in terms of disease-free material, which can be planted in a mechanised way to reduce the cost of production and use 100% of the nursery areas for sugar, ethanol and energy production.
The collaboration will make sugarcane CEEDS available for purchase by Brazilian customers from Explante who, in addition to providing the inputs for CEEDS production, will support mill projects to establish NEF CEEDS™ production modules for in-house supply.
The CEEDS technology is provided by NEF through licensing, to help mills establish in-house production modules. These plants are horticulture-intensive, small footprint sites that can be a new project or expand the production capacity of existing plant investments in plug plant production (MPB). This Partnership will facilitate large-scale, low-cost domestic supply of clean seed planting material for 500 to 5,000 ha per year per production module. NEF provides local technical support, from initial assessment of requirements to on-site implementation and ongoing support.
“Innovation is present in the field and agribusiness is experiencing times of opportunity. In this sense, New Energy Farms (NEF) known for innovating and transforming processes with a focus on identifying problems and generating new solutions for perennial grass plantations, NEF brings CEEDS ™ technology to the national market. High technology added to great efficiency and cost reduction generating a high performance of the sugarcane plantation; the evolution of mechanised planting“, said Pablo Marin, LATAM Operations Director of New Energy Farms.
“With the evolution of technologies, we will be able to solve issues of low yields in sugarcane fields and optimise labour in the field. Today, with biotechnology, we have the best way to eliminate phytosanitary problems and increase unfolding rates. Now, with the merger of CEEDS Technology, we will have the opportunity to bring a complete technological package for the reform of sugarcane plantations, in an optimised way and with lower planting costs. The partnership with Explante is part of the company’s strategic growth plan in the sugar-alcohol sector and in the development of innovative technologies for other crops in Brazil,” said Alexandre Landgraf, Director of Explante.
“All sugarcane mills urgently need to solve the problem of mechanising sugarcane planting, as well as operating much more efficiently and at much more attractive costs. CEEDS technology has been developed to solve the problems of quality, productivity, planting efficiency and cost reduction”, said Daniel Bachner, associate at New Energy Farms.

New Energy Farms (NEF) is an agricultural technology company established in 2010 to develop synthetic seeds for crops that do not produce conventional seeds, such as sugarcane. NEF has developed and patented the unique and innovative CEEDS™ technology for the multiplication and planting of sugarcane crops worldwide. CEEDS™ is a small coated propagule that is directly planted in the field like a conventional seed.
Explante Biotecnologia, with more than 20 years in the market, has been developing processes and technologies for large-scale in vitro seedling production, aiming to meet the growing demand of producers and companies that need to expand high-potential genetic materials. Explante has been evolving seedling production processes, with modern techniques for meristem extraction and plant multiplication, using improved bioreactors for different crops. Our process guarantees safety in the formation of healthy fields with high productivity for agribusiness.
